The Lizard is a peninsula of Cornwall, and contains the most southerly point of mainland Cornwall and of the island Great Britain, Lizard Point. Historically a particularly hazardous stretch of coastline, it was also known as the "Graveyard of Ships".
Known for lovely serpentine rock of which most of the peninusula is made of. This one of the only places you can find serpentine. Serpentine was one of the rocks thrust up from underneath the crust, which was rich in iron and magnesium. When the Rheic Ocean crust became what is now Cornwall, peridotite, was changed to serpentinite, or serpentine - one of the Lizard's most beautiful rocks. |
