Landscape photography is one of the most popular forms of photography, most people have a landscape photograph on the wall at home or in the office. I take a lot of enjoyment out of taking landscape photos and also viewing them once back at home. Often while viewing prints or the images from my computer I can really appreciate the beauty of the places I've been. Most of us take for granted the environment we live in, pausing a moment in a photograph like this and sometimes showing it in a new perspective can make us more aware of it's beauty.
The panoramic image above is an equirectangular projection. To produce a virtual reality image I first need process this type of image. Once stitched together into this projection I can then convert the image into a cube and using perspective correcting software produce a spherical image. The image above can be viewed as an interactive spherical image here. You have probably seen an equiectangular projection many times before in the form of a world map.
This type of panoramic image can make a superb print and can be printed quite large, up to 8 metres. I have a large 1.5 x 0.75 metre print as an example, please ask if you would like to view it.
Virtual reality photography is one of the best ways to photograph a landscape, it places people in the environment just as if they were their themselves. It is also ideal if you are trying to show how a building sits within a landscape. For example a holiday cottage with a nice view over the sea can often be very hard or even impossible to take a photograph showing the relationship between the cottage and the view. Often people take an image of the cottage and another image of the view, how the two images relate to each other has to be imagined. With a VR image this problem is solved.
Traditional still photography will always have it's place, usually I will take both VR and still photographs while on location. Soon I will upload many examples of my still photography to this page for you to see, watch this space. I use all my lenses from 12mm upto 300mm for lanscape photography.
